The Department Formation and Learning (DFA) of the Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana provides teacher education to pre-service primary education teachers (bachelor, about 150 students) and secondary education teachers (masters, about 200 students), and continuing education to the in-service teachers (about 2500 participants per year), blending academic and professional perspectives. DFA is actively engaged in high-impact national and international research and development projects, including European projects within the Lifelong Learning Programme, or international endeavours such as PISA or ICILS.
DFA research activities, tightly linked with its territory, grew from a multidisciplinary approach, in response to the demands of an increasingly complex educational and social environment. Applied research at DFA focuses on the understanding and innovation of the school system and of teacher education.
